Core Concept
Trigonometry focuses on ratios in right triangles, where one angle is 90 degrees. The longest side opposite the right angle is the hypotenuse, with the other two sides called the opposite and adjacent relative to a specific acute angle.

Basic Functions
Sine (sin θ) = opposite / hypotenuse
Cosine (cos θ) = adjacent / hypotenuse
Tangent (tan θ) = opposite / adjacent
These extend to six functions including cosecant (csc = 1/sin), secant (sec = 1/cos), and cotangent (cot = 1/tan).

History
Originating from ancient Greek words meaning "triangle measure," trigonometry dates back over 3,000 years for astronomy and navigation. Hipparchus formalized it in the 2nd century BCE.

Applications
It measures building heights, road slopes, wave heights, and distances in fields like engineering, geography, and physics. For example, sin θ helps calculate a tree's height from its shadow
