Benefits of the Amazon Forest for Humans
The Amazon rainforest has several key functions that are very important for the Earth’s climate, biodiversity, and human life. here are the main functions:
1. Producing oxygen and storing carbon
The plants of the Amazon absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the air and use it in photosynthesis to make food and release oxygen (O₂).
This makes the Amazon a major “carbon sink” and helps reduce the greenhouse effect and global warming.
2. Regulating the global climate
The forest cools the planet and stabilizes weather patterns by storing carbon and influencing rainfall and temperature. If the Amazon is destroyed, much more CO₂ would stay in the atmosphere, speeding up climate change.
3. Maintaining the water cycle
Trees in the Amazon release huge amounts of water vapor into the air through evaporation and transpiration. This “green ocean” effect helps create clouds and rains, not only over the forest itself but also over distant regions in South America.
4. Supporting biodiversity
The Amazon is home to the richest collection of plant and animal species on Earth, including millions of insects, birds, mammals, and trees. Many of these species cannot live anywhere else, so the forest acts as a giant biological reservoir.
5. Supplying resources and livelihoods
Local and Indigenous communities depend on the Amazon for food, medicine, fuel, and building materials. At the global level, the forest also provides raw materials and genetic resources that can be used in agriculture, medicine, and industry.
