Composition Of Water
Water is a chemical compound made up of two elements: hydrogen and oxygen. In English, we say that the composition of water is hydrogen and oxygen atoms combined in a 2:1 ratio, with the chemical formula H₂O.
Basic molecular composition
Each water molecule (H₂O) consists of two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom. This simple structure makes water a polar molecule, which is why it dissolves many substances and is often called a “universal solvent.”
State and form
Water can exist in three physical states
Solid: ice
Liquid: water (liquid water)
Gas: water vapor or steam
Natural water composition
Naturally occurring water (from rivers, lakes, or groundwater) is not 100% pure H₂O.
It also contains small amounts of:
Dissolved gases such as oxygen (O₂) and carbon dioxide (CO₂)
Minerals and ions such as calcium (Ca²⁺), magnesium (Mg²⁺), sodium (Na⁺), and chloride (Cl⁻), which affect hardness and taste
