History of Jordan
Jordan, officially the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, boasts a rich history spanning millennia in the crossroads of the Middle East. Its strategic location has made it a cradle of ancient civilizations, from prehistoric settlements to modern statehood.
The iconic city of Petra, carved by the Nabataeans over 2,000 years ago, exemplifies this era's architectural ingenuity with its tombs, temples, and water systems hewn from sandstone.
Islamic and Ottoman Era
Arab Muslim forces conquered the region in 636 AD, integrating it into caliphates like the Umayyads and Abbasids. It faced Crusader incursions (1115-1187) before Ottoman control from 1517 to 1916, with brief Egyptian dominance in between.
Modern Independence
Post-World War I, Britain administered Transjordan under a mandate, granting independence in 1946 under King Abdullah I. Jordan annexed the West Bank after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War but lost it in 1967; it has since navigated regional conflicts while maintaining stability.
