History Of Syria
Syria has a rich history as one of the cradles of civilization, dating back to ancient times. Its story spans millennia, from early settlements to modern conflicts.
Ancient Origins
Syria's history begins around 10,000 BCE with some of the world's earliest known farming communities in the Fertile Crescent, including sites like Tell Halaf and Ebla, which developed writing systems by 2400 BCE. It later fell under empires like the Akkadians, Hittites, Assyrians (from which "Syria" derives its name around the 10th century BCE), and Persians. Greek and Roman rule followed, with cities like Antioch and Palmyra becoming key Hellenistic and imperial centers, marked by grand temples and aqueducts.

Islamic and Ottoman Era
In 636 CE, Arab Muslim conquests brought Islam to Syria, making Damascus the Umayyad Caliphate's capital from 661–750 CE, a golden age of architecture like the Umayyad Mosque. Crusaders invaded in the 11th–13th centuries, but Saladin recaptured much of the land. Ottoman rule from 1516 to 1918 brought relative stability, with Syria as a key province
Modern Independence
Post-World War I, Syria briefly formed the Arab Kingdom in 1920 before French Mandate control until independence in 1946. It joined the United Arab Republic with Egypt in 1958–1961 and fought in Arab-Israeli wars. The Ba'ath Party seized power in 1963, with Hafez al-Assad ruling from 1971 until his death in 2000, succeeded by Bashar al-Assad.
Civil War Impact
A civil war erupted in 2011 amid Arab Spring protests, leading to widespread destruction of historic sites like Aleppo's UNESCO-listed old city, souks, and mosques, displacing millions. Before the conflict, Syria boasted intact Roman ruins and vibrant markets; post-war images show rubble-strewn streets and ruined landmarks like the Grand Serail.
These before-and-after photos highlight Aleppo's transformation from a picturesque ancient city to devastation, underscoring the war's toll on cultural treasures.
