Lightning That Never Stops – Catatumbo
What happens? Lightning occurs for approximately 10 hours each night It can occur up to 200–300 days per year In one hour, there can be thousands of lightning flashes.
Why does this happen? This phenomenon is caused by a unique combination: Hot, humid air from the lake rises Met with cold air from the Andes mountains The air collides → forming a large storm cloud This cloud continues to produce lightning non-stop
Interesting fact: It is nicknamed the “Natural Lighthouse” because its light is visible from afar There is almost no loud thunder because it is far from residential areas Once considered the place with the most lightning in the world.
Why is it unique? Usually lightning only appears during brief storms, but here it happens consistently and routinely — it's like nature has its own “lightning machine.”
