Types of Minerals
There are thousands of types of minerals in the world (more than 5,000 have been identified in the field of mineralogy). So it's impossible to list them all one by one, but I can explain the main types of minerals along with important examples
Mineral Groups in the World
1. Silicates (most abundant on Earth) Contains silicon (Si) and oxygen (O) Examples:
Quartz (SiO₂)
Feldspar Mica Olivine
These are the main minerals that make up the Earth's crust (~90%)
2. Oxides Formed from metal + oxygen Examples:
Hematite (Fe₂O₃)
Magnetite (Fe₃O₄)
Widely used as iron ore
3. Carbonates Contain carbonate ions (CO₃) Examples:
Calcite (CaCO₃)
Dolomite
Commonly found in limestone
4. Sulfates Contains sulfate ions (SO₄) Example:
Gypsum (CaSO₄·2H₂O)
Anhydrite Used in building materials
5. Halides Formed from metal + halogen Example:
Halite (NaCl / table salt) Fluorite
6. Sulfides Contain sulfur (S)
Example:
Pyrite (FeS₂) Galena (PbS) ➡️ Often used as metal ores
7. Native Elements Minerals consisting of only one element
Example: Gold (Au)
Silver (Ag) Copper (Cu) Carbon (diamond & graphite)
8. Phosphates Contain phosphate ions (PO₄) Example: Apatite ➡️ Important for fertilizers
