Various Types of Primate Orders in the World | The Monkey
Many animals look similar to monkeys because they are closely related primates. In biology, monkeys are just one part of the “primate” group, which also includes animals that resemble monkeys but are not exactly the same. Below are the main types of animals that look like monkeys, explained in English.
1. Other monkeys
These are true monkeys, so they look very monkey‑like.
Macaques: Medium‑sized monkeys with short tails, often seen in Asia; they walk on all fours and have expressive faces.
Squirrel monkeys: Small, agile monkeys with thin limbs and long tails, found in Central and South America.
Capuchin monkeys: Small monkeys with very intelligent behavior and often a “cap” of light fur on the head.
2. Lemurs
Lemurs are primates from Madagascar that look like small monkeys with big eyes and long tails.
A ring-tailed lemur sitting, with grey fur, white face, and a black and white banded tail.
Ring‑tailed lemur: Has a long, black‑and‑white striped tail and a fox‑like face; they often sit upright and move on the ground and in trees.
Black lemur: Mostly black fur with bright eyes; they live in trees and are very agile.
3. Tarsiers
Tarsiers are small, nocturnal primates that strongly resemble little monkeys.
They have huge eyes, long thin legs, and very long tails.
Examples include the pygmy tarsier from Sulawesi, Indonesia, which is one of the smallest primates.
4. Apes (chimpanzees, bonobos, gibbons)
Apes do not have tails, but their body shape, hands, and facial expressions can look a lot like monkeys.
Chimpanzees: Large, very intelligent primates with long arms, strong hands, and human‑like upper bodies.
Bonobos: Similar to chimpanzees but slimmer and more slender, with a more peaceful social style.
Gibbons: Smaller, long‑armed apes that swing through trees like monkeys but are actually tailless apes.
5. Other unusual primate‑like animals
Some animals are more distant relatives but still remind people of monkeys.
Proboscis monkey: Found in Borneo, it has a very large nose and a long tail, so it looks like a strange‑nosed monkey.
Aye‑aye: From Madagascar; it has rodent‑like teeth, big ears, and long fingers, but it is actually a primate that can look like a weird monkey.
