Understanding Atomic Molecules and Examples
Atom An atom is the smallest part of a material (substance) that still retains the properties of that substance.
Atomic structure:
Protons (+) → produce a positive charge Neutrons (0) → have no charge Electrons (-) → carry negative charges and their surroundings
Examples:
Oxygen atoms (O), hydrogen atoms (H)
Molecules A molecule is a combination of two or more atoms bonded together.
Example:
Water = H₂O → consists of 2 hydrogen atoms + 1 oxygen atom Oxygen = O₂ → 2 frozen oxygen atoms
Main Differences Atom Molecule Smallest particle Combined atoms Stand alone Bonded to each other
Examples:
O, H Examples: H₂O, CO₂ 💡 Analogy to Make It Easy Atom = like a letter Molecule = like a word made of letters
Example:
H + O → like a letter H₂O → like the word "water"
