8 Wind Direction
There are several common systems of wind directions, but the standard modern compass uses 8 main directions (cardinal and intercardinal points).
Basic 8‑point compass
These are the directions most people use in everyday life and beginner navigation:
North (N) – 0°
Northeast (NE) – 45°
East (E) – 90°
Southeast (SE) – 135°
South (S) – 180°
Southwest (SW) – 225°
West (W) – 270°
Northwest (NW) – 315°
So, in the basic system, there are 8 wind directions.
More detailed systems
In more advanced compasses, people expand these 8 directions into:
A 16‑point compass (also called “half‑winds”), which adds directions such as north‑northeast (NNE), east‑northeast (ENE), etc.
A 32‑point compass, which uses even finer points such as north by east (NbE), northeast by north (NEbN), and so on.
Meteorology and navigation usually describe wind direction as the direction the wind is coming from, measured in degrees from 0° (north) to 359° on a 360° circle.
