About Pearl
Formation Process
Natural pearls form accidentally around parasites or debris, while cultured pearls involve human insertion of a nucleus into the mollusk for controlled growth, taking 1–3 years. Nacre's brick-like aragonite crystal structure scatters light, producing the signature glow in colors from white and pink to black and green. Unlike myths, sand rarely triggers formation; it's usually mantle tissue damage.
Types and Sources
Saltwater pearls from ocean oysters are prized for size and shape, while freshwater pearls from mussels offer affordability and variety. South Sea pearls from Indonesia, including Lombok, are renowned for their large size (up to 20mm) and golden hues, tying into local biodiversity.
