Balut | Unique Philipine Food
Balut is a famous Filipino delicacy consisting of a fertilized duck egg that has been incubated for 14 to 21 days and then boiled or steamed before eating. Inside the egg is a semi-developed duck embryo with visible features like feathers, bones, beak, and eyes, which makes it one of the Philippines' most iconic—and for many foreigners, most controversial—exotic foods
How to eat balut:
Crack the shell at the narrow end and peel a small hole in the membrane
Slurp the "sabaw" (the clear amniotic fluid/soup inside) as an appetizer
Season with salt and vinegar, then peel and eat the yolk and embryo like a hard-boiled egg.
Balut is not unique to the Philippines—it's also found in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, and is believed to have been brought to Southeast Asia by Chinese seafarers. Despite its polarizing reputation abroad, it remains a beloved staple and symbol of culinary bravery for many Filipinos.
