Bicycle Inventor

The bicycle is usually credited to Baron Karl von Drais for the first practical two-wheeled running machine in 1817, often called the Draisine or hobby horse. Later improvements came from inventors such as Pierre and Ernest Michaux, and John Kemp Starley helped shape the modern bicycle design.

Why this matters
There isn’t just one “bicycle inventor,” because the bicycle evolved in stages. Drais introduced the early steerable two-wheeler, the Michaux family added pedals, and Starley’s 1885 design is close to the modern bicycle.

First bicycle-like machine: Baron Karl von Drais
Pedal bicycle development: Pierre and Ernest Michaux
Modern bicycle design: John Kemp Starley
