Dragonfly Running Speed

Dragonflies cannot run — they have no running speed. Their legs are too short and weak for walking or running on the ground. They are essentially immobile on land and can only use their legs for perching, catching prey in mid-air, and holding onto mates.

Dragonflies are built exclusively for flight. Their average cruising flight speed is about 10 mph (16 km/h), while larger species can reach 36 mph (58 km/h) for short bursts. The Australian dragonfly Austrophlebia costalis holds the record as the fastest flying insect, reaching up to 36 mph (58 km/h) in maintainable airspeed and even 61.3 mph (98.6 km/h) ground velocity in recorded measurements.

If a dragonfly lands on the ground, it will immediately take flight rather than attempt to walk or run away.
