Infrared | How It Works


Infrared works by detecting heat energy, or infrared radiation, that objects naturally emit. In simple terms, warmer objects give off more infrared energy, and devices like thermometers or thermal cameras measure that energy to estimate temperature.

How it works
Every object above absolute zero emits infrared radiation.
An infrared thermometer uses a lens to focus that radiation onto a detector, often a thermopile.
The detector converts the incoming energy into an electrical signal, which the device turns into a temperature reading or image.

Common uses
Non-contact thermometers for people, food, and machinery.
Thermal cameras that create heat maps by converting infrared energy into visible images.
IR sensors in electronics, where some devices emit infrared light and measure reflections, while others passively detect emitted heat
