Lion Running Speed

Lions can sprint at speeds of roughly 80 km/h (about 50 mph), though most documented estimates put them in the range of 64–76 km/h (40–47 mph).

Typical sprint speed
Adult lions rely on short, explosive bursts rather than long‑distance running, reaching their top speed over short distances such as 100–200 meters. This makes them effective ambush predators that use stealth and acceleration instead of endurance.

How they compare to cheetahs
Lions are much slower than cheetahs, whose top speeds can reach about 110–120 km/h (70 mph). Both big cats are sprinters, but cheetahs are adapted for higher‑speed chases while lions depend more on strength and teamwork when hunting.
