Monaco History

Monaco is a very small sovereign state on the Mediterranean coast, located between France and Italy. It has a long and unique political history centered on the House of Grimaldi, which has ruled Monaco almost continuously since the late 13th century.

Early history
The area of Monaco was already inhabited in prehistoric times and later settled by the Ligurian people. In ancient times it became a Greek colony called Monoikos, a name that later evolved into “Monaco.”
By the 13th century, it had become a strategic fortress on a rocky promontory overlooking the sea, first under the control of the Republic of Genoa.

Rule of the Grimaldi family
In 1297, Francesco (François) Grimaldi and his men captured the fortress by disguising themselves as monks, thus founding the Grimaldi dynasty that still rules today. Over the centuries, Monaco passed under the influence of Genoa, Spain, Savoy, and France, but the Grimaldi family kept its position as local rulers.
In the 19th century, Monaco became a protectorate of the Kingdom of Sardinia and later a fully sovereign state under French protection, with the French government guaranteeing its independence.

Modern Monaco
In the 20th century, Monaco adopted a modern constitution (1911 and again 1962), abolished the death penalty, and introduced voting rights for women, strengthening its system as a constitutional monarchy. In 1993, the Principality of Monaco became a full member of the United Nations, confirming its international sovereignty.
