Mouse Running Speed
A mouse is surprisingly fast for its size. In general, a house mouse can run around 8 mph, or about 13 km/h, and in short bursts some mice can reach higher sprint speeds, roughly in the 10–18 mph range depending on the species and situation.
That speed matters because mice rely on quick movement to escape predators, cross open spaces, and reach food or shelter. Their small bodies, light weight, and agile legs let them accelerate rapidly, change direction sharply, and squeeze through tight spaces that larger animals cannot use.
In practice, people often underestimate how fast a mouse can move indoors. A mouse may seem to appear and disappear in an instant because it does not usually run at a steady speed for long; instead, it moves in short, sudden bursts. That makes it harder to catch or block, especially in homes, warehouses, and farms where there are many hiding places.
