Soursop Fruit Was First Discovered
Soursop fruit (Annona muricata) was not “discovered” at a single moment in history, but it is native to the tropical regions of the Americas, especially the Caribbean, Central America, and northern South America.
Where and when it appeared
Botanical sources indicate that soursop originated in the lowland tropics of Central America and nearby areas of northern South America.
By the early 16th century, Spanish chronicler Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo described soursop as abundant in the West Indies and northern South America, which is among the earliest written records of the fruit.
Spread beyond the Americas
From its native range, soursop was carried by European and later colonial trade routes into tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and the Pacific, where it became naturalized and cultivated in places such as Indonesia, the Philippines, and parts of East Africa.
Today it grows widely in tropical lowlands around the world, but its oldest known origins are still traced back to the American tropics.
