The Deepest Canyon in the World

The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon in Tibet, China is usually considered the deepest canyon in the world. It cuts through the eastern Himalayas and is famous for its extreme depth, steep walls, and very rugged terrain.


Why it is so deep
The canyon was formed by the combined action of the Yarlung Tsangpo River and the intense uplift of the Himalayas. As the mountains rose, the river kept cutting downward, carving an exceptionally deep gorge over time.

Size and scale
Its maximum depth is often reported at about 6,009 meters or 19,715 feet, which is deeper than many other famous canyons. It is also very long, stretching for hundreds of kilometers through difficult mountain terrain.

Why it matters
This canyon is important not just for geography, but also for biodiversity. The steep elevation changes create many different climate zones, so the area supports a wide range of plants and animals.

Other contenders
Some sources mention Cotahuasi Canyon or Colca Canyon in Peru as among the deepest canyons, depending on how depth is measured. That is why different references sometimes give different “deepest canyon” answers.
