The First Betel Eating Culture

The tradition of chewing betel leaf (makan sirih) cannot be definitively attributed to a single country as its first origin, but there are two main theories:
Indonesia (Southeast Asian archipelago): Based on linguistic evidence, the tradition most likely originated from the Indonesian archipelago. The oldest archaeological evidence of betel chewing was found in Gua Roh, Thailand, and Indonesian communities have practiced this tradition since at least the 6th century CE across Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Nusa Tenggara, and Papua.

India: According to literary stories and oral history, many believe the tradition originated from India. Historical travelers like Marco Polo (13th century), Ibn Batuta, and Vasco da Gama noted that Indian people had betel quid in their mouths.

In summary, while literary sources point to India, linguistic and archaeological evidence suggests the Indonesian archipelago as the more likely original origin, and it is now recognized as an important part of Indonesian cultural heritage.
