The First Swimming Sport Present

Swimming became an organized sport in the 19th century, with the first swimming organization founded in London in 1837 and the first swimming championship held in Australia in 1846. It has also been part of the modern Olympic Games since 1896.

The earliest history of swimming, people were swimming thousands of years earlier, evidence goes back to around 2500 BC, and even prehistoric cave paintings show swimmers.

Swimming as a sport developed much later than swimming as a human activity. People have been swimming for thousands of years, but it became organized into competitive sport in the 1800s, when rules, clubs, and championships started appearing.

Here’s the simple timeline:
Ancient times: Humans were swimming long before formal sports existed. Evidence from old art and writing shows swimming was already known in early civilizations.

1837: The first known swimming organization was founded in London.

1846: The first recorded swimming championship took place in Australia.

1896: Swimming became part of the modern Olympic Games.
