The Lowest Mountain in the World

The lowest mountain in the world is Mount Jingshan (Jingshan Hill) in Shouguang, Shandong Province, China. It is only about 0.6 meters (60 cm) high above ground, which looks more like a small rock than a traditional mountain.

What is Mount Jingshan?
Mount Jingshan is officially recognized as the world’s smallest or lowest mountain because geologists consider it the top of a buried hill that sank into the ground long ago. Most of it is underground, so only a tiny rocky outcrop remains visible at the surface.

Why is it still called a “mountain”?
Even though it is only about the height of a chair, it has its own slope, summit, and base, and it was formed by natural geological processes. In geography, any independent, naturally formed elevation with a summit can be classified as a mountain, no matter how small.

Other very low mountains
For comparison, some other extremely low “mountains” include:
Mount Wycheproof (Australia) – about 43 meters above the surrounding land (148 m above sea level).
Mount Pleasant (Texas, USA) – about 5 meters high.
Mount Hiyoriyama (Japan) – about 3 meters high.

However, Mount Jingshan is considered the lowest because its visible peak is only about 0.6 m above ground level, making it the shortest mountain anyone can literally step over in one step.
