The Most Strict Prisons in the World

Some of the most strictly run prisons in the world are “supermax” or maximum‑security facilities that emphasize isolation, constant surveillance, and minimal contact with other people or the outside world. Below are several frequently cited examples and what makes them especially strict.

ADX Florence (USA) – “Alcatraz of the Rockies”
This U.S. supermax prison in Colorado holds terrorists, high‑profile murderers, and other extremely dangerous inmates, most of whom spend about 23 hours a day in solitary confinement.

Cells are small, windows are slit‑like, and inmates are under 24‑hour video monitoring, with tightly controlled food, exercise, and shower schedules.

Black Dolphin Prison (Russia)
Officially known as Penal Colony No. 6, this Russian prison is notorious for its extremely restrictive regime for dangerous criminals and murderers.

Inmates are kept in tiny individual cells, under constant surveillance, and some reports claim they are not allowed to lie or sit down during daytime hours.

Tadmor (Palmyra) Prison (Syria)
Under the former Assad regime, Tadmor in the Syrian desert was infamous for torture, executions, and extreme psychological control; prisoners were often forbidden even to make eye contact.

Although the original prison was partially destroyed, it remains a symbol of one of the harshest and most punitive prison regimes in modern history.

Bang Kwang Central Prison (Thailand)
Known as the “Bangkok Hilton,” this prison is infamous for its strict rules, overcrowding, and harsh treatment of inmates, including many foreign drug‑offenders.

Long sentences, tight discipline, and limited access to family or outside communication make it one of the toughest carceral environments in Southeast Asia.

Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp (Cuba)
Operated by the United States, this facility was set up mainly for terrorism‑related detainees after 9/11 and is known for its highly secretive, high‑security regime and long‑term detention without trial.

Detainees are held in isolated cells, under strict movement and communication controls, and the camp has been heavily criticized by human‑rights groups.

Other notoriously strict facilities
Klong Prem (Thailand): Known for harsh conditions and overcrowding; drug‑related offenders often end up here under long sentences.

Tadmor‑style regimes and several massive, overcrowded prisons in Venezuela, Colombia, and Rwanda are also cited for extreme control, violence, and minimal humane standards.
