The Rarest Minerals in the World
1. Kyawthuite – the rarest known mineral
Kyawthuite is often called “the rarest mineral on Earth” because only one crystal has ever been discovered, in the Mogok area of Myanmar. It is a tiny, deep‑orange gem‑like grain weighing about 1/3 gram.
2. Painite
Painite is famous as one of the rarest gem minerals; for decades only a few known crystals existed. It is a red‑to‑brownish hexagonal crystal, originally found in Myanmar, and its scarcity made it extremely valuable until more material was found in the 2000s.
3. Benitoite
Benitoite is a striking blue mineral that occurs in only a few locations, most famously in California, USA. It is a barium–titanium silicate and is the state gem of California because of its rarity and vivid blue color.
4. Paraíba tourmaline
Paraíba tourmaline is a rare electric‑blue to greenish‑blue tourmaline, first found in Paraíba State, Brazil, in 1989. Its intense color comes from copper and sometimes manganese, and most gem‑grade Paraíba comes from only a few small mines in Brazil and later Nigeria/Mozambique.
5. Jadeite
Jadeite is a rarer relative of jade and is much more valuable than common nephrite jade. It forms in high‑pressure, low‑temperature conditions and is mined mainly in Myanmar, Guatemala, and a few other places, giving it several colors such as green, white, lavender, and rare blue.
