The Shortest Waterfall in the World

Venta Rapid, or Ventas Rumba, in Kuldīga, Latvia. This waterfall on the Venta River is renowned as the widest in Europe, with a width of approximately 249 meters and a height of approximately 1.8–2.2 meters, depending on the water flow. 

Overview Venta Rapid is located in the town of Kuldīga, western Latvia, and is often considered one of the country's most iconic natural landmarks. Because its height is so low, the water doesn't fall steeply like other large waterfalls, but rather stretches wide along the river. Why it's unique? The main uniqueness lies in the combination of its very short height and very large width. Sources I found indicate that this waterfall is only about 1.8–2.2 meters high, which is why it is often mentioned on lists of the world's "shortest" waterfalls. 

Form and geology This waterfall is formed from Devonian dolomite, with the difference in rock hardness at the top and bottom influencing the shape of the flow. This is why the water flow appears gentle but remains distinct, acting as natural steps in the river. 

Tourist Attraction From a tourist perspective, Vente Rapid is attractive because it can be viewed from both sides of the river and also from the old brick bridge in Kuldīga. In spring and autumn, this place is also known for the phenomenon of fish jumping over the current, often referred to as “flying fish” in Kuldīga. 

Important Status In 1977, Venta Rapid was designated a Latvian natural monument. This status confirms its value not only as a tourist attraction, but also as an important part of Latvia's natural heritage.
