Various Swimming Techniques
Swimming techniques usually refer to the main strokes plus supporting skills like breathing, turning, and body position. The four core strokes are freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly, and swimmers also use techniques like streamline, bilateral breathing, flip turns, treading water, and underwater dolphin kicking.
Main strokes
Freestyle/front crawl: the fastest and most efficient stroke for most swimmers, using alternating arm pulls and a flutter kick.
Backstroke: swum on the back with alternating arms and a flutter kick.
Breaststroke: a more technical stroke with simultaneous arm movement and a frog-like kick.
Butterfly: the most physically demanding of the four, using simultaneous arm recovery and a dolphin kick.
Useful techniques
Streamline: keeps the body long and reduces drag after starts and turns.
Bilateral breathing: breathing on both sides in freestyle to improve balance and symmetry.
Flip turns: help maintain speed during lap swimming.
Treading water: keeps you afloat upright when resting or waiting.
Underwater dolphin kicking: helps preserve momentum after push-offs and turns.
Practical use
If you are learning to swim, start with freestyle and backstroke, then add breaststroke, and leave butterfly for later because it requires more strength and timing. For general fitness and safety, it helps to practice body alignment, breathing control, and treading water alongside the strokes
