Various Types of Grapes
Grapes come in many types, but they’re usually grouped into a few main categories: table grapes for eating fresh, wine grapes for making wine, raisin grapes for drying, and a smaller group of wild or hybrid grapes. Common examples include Concord, Thompson Seedless, Flame Seedless, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Muscat.
Main grape groups
Table grapes: Sweet, juicy grapes meant for fresh eating; examples include Concord, Niagara, and Red Globe.
Wine grapes: Grown for fermentation and flavor balance; examples include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Nebbiolo.
Raisin grapes: Often seedless and ideal for drying; Thompson Seedless is the classic
example
Hybrid and American varieties: Cold-hardy grapes such as Concord, Catawba, and Niagara, plus French-American hybrids like Vidal Blanc and Chambourcin.
