Why Are Clouds Cold

Clouds are cold because they usually form high in the atmosphere, where air temperature is much lower than at the ground, and because many clouds are made of tiny ice crystals or supercooled droplets. They can also make daytime feel cooler by reflecting sunlight back into space.

Why clouds are cold
Air gets colder as you go higher because pressure drops and the air expands. When moist air rises and cools enough, water vapor condenses into tiny droplets or freezes into ice, which is how visible clouds form.

What clouds are made of
Clouds are not water vapor itself; they are tiny liquid droplets, ice crystals, or a mix of both. In higher, colder clouds like cirrus, ice crystals are common.

Why they feel cool
On sunny days, clouds often reduce how much sunlight reaches the surface, so the ground heats up less
