Yin and Yang

Yin and Yang are a Chinese philosophical idea that describes how opposite forces are interconnected and balanced. Yin is usually linked with darkness, passivity, cold, and the moon, while Yang is linked with light, activity, warmth, and the sun. 

Core idea
The main point is not that one side is good and the other is bad, but that both are needed and each contains a bit of the other. This is why the classic symbol has a small dot of the opposite color in each half, showing mutual dependence. 

Common meanings
Yin: dark, receptive, quiet, cool, feminine, and inward. 
Yang: light, active, warm, expansive, masculine, and outward. 

Balance: harmony comes from the right mix of both, not from eliminating one side. 
Where it is used
Yin and Yang appear in Chinese philosophy, traditional medicine, religion, and culture. The idea dates back to ancient Chinese thought and became a major way of explaining how nature and life work.
