Hidden World Beneath Antarctica's Ice

One of the most fascinating facts about Antarctica is that an entire hidden landscape lies beneath its massive ice sheet. Although Antarctica appears to be a flat, frozen continent, scientists have discovered mountains, valleys, rivers, and lakes buried under kilometers of ice.

A Hidden Continent
The Antarctic ice sheet covers about 98% of the continent. In some places, the ice is more than 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) thick. Using radar, seismic surveys, and satellite measurements, researchers have mapped the terrain underneath and found a surprisingly diverse landscape.

Beneath the ice are:
Vast mountain ranges
Deep valleys and canyons
Ancient river systems
Hundreds of subglacial lakes
Large basins and plateaus

Lake Vostok
One of the most famous hidden lakes is Lake Vostok.
Lake Vostok is buried beneath approximately 4 kilometers of ice and is one of the largest subglacial lakes on Earth. Scientists believe it has been isolated from the atmosphere for millions of years, making it a unique environment for studying extreme life forms and Earth's ancient climate.

The lake is about:
250 km long
50 km wide
More than 500 meters deep in some areas
Because it has been sealed beneath ice for such a long time, researchers are interested in whether unusual microorganisms may exist there.

Hidden Mountains
Antarctica also contains the Gamburtsev Mountains, a mountain range completely buried beneath ice.
These mountains are often compared to the Alps because of their rugged peaks and deep valleys. Despite being hidden, they played an important role in the formation of Antarctica's massive ice sheet millions of years ago.

Subglacial Rivers
Scientists have discovered networks of liquid water flowing beneath the ice. These rivers move water between hidden lakes and eventually toward the ocean.

The water remains liquid because:
Pressure from the overlying ice lowers the freezing point.
Heat from Earth's interior warms the base of the ice sheet.
These hidden waterways can influence how quickly Antarctic glaciers move toward the sea.
