How Ants Breathe
Ants don’t have lungs like humans. Instead, they breathe through a system of tiny tubes called tracheae.
Here’s how it works:
Along the sides of an ant’s body are tiny openings called spiracles.
Air enters through these spiracles.
The air travels through branching tubes (tracheae) that carry oxygen directly to the ant’s tissues and organs.
Carbon dioxide leaves the body through the same openings.
Because oxygen is delivered directly through tubes, ants don’t need blood to carry oxygen the way humans do.
Interesting fact:
Some ants can survive underwater for a while by trapping tiny air bubbles around their bodies or slowing their metabolism.
